City Boy reached the pinnacle of their vocals/harmonies with this album. After finding this gem, my friends and I scoured cut-out bins and amassed the whole catalog. The other albums such as Young Men Gone West, Book Early, Dinner at the Ritz, Heads are Rolling are good, but tend to be a bit quirkie and the earlier stuff is sometimes comical (. 1979 was the year when City Boy would return to their Art Rock ambitions and release their most accomplished album yet! The Day The Earth Caught Fire was both heavier and tighter than the two previous releases.
City Boy formed in the 70's, in an era where Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Rush or Deep Purple were dominating the scene. This English natives in spite of having one or two hits, are unknown to the general public of rock fans. The Day the Earth Caught Fire is a great example of that bad-timing, it's an impressive progressive rock album with some "poppish" tunes here and there. It mixes superbly elements of progressive, melodic, pop and rock music with impressive vocals and heavy guitar compositions. Like I said above in business timing is everything and this album wasn't.
