The two little Zigeunerliedchen from the Liederalbum für die Jugend form a delightful contrast. There is a strong element of pastiche to which is added the fun of quodlibet. The words are from the Spanish by Geibel, but Northern Europe has gypsies of its own and Schumann has come up with a compromise where Spanish temperament meets the Hungarian tzigane. He has thus cobbled together influences as well as texts-rearranging Geibel’s poems to suit his purposes.
