The mostly obscure material (other than "Nica's Dream") and the time period may make one think that is an overtly commercial release from vibraphonist Cal Tjader. Although he utilizes the electric piano of Al Zulaica and electric bassist Jim McCabe (in addition to Armando Peraza and John Rae on percussion), Cal Tjader's music on the Live at the Lighthouse sessions found on Plugs In is actually not all that different from his usual infectious brand of Latin jazz.

Callen Radcliffe "Cal" Tjader, Jr. (/ˈtʃeɪdər/ JAY-dər; July 16, 1925 – May 5, 1982) was an American Latin jazz musician, known as the most successful non-Latino Latin musician. He explored other jazz idioms, even as he continued to perform the music of Cuba, the Caribbean, and Latin America for the rest of his life. Tjader played the vibraphone primarily. He was accomplished on the drums, bongos, congas, timpani, and the piano. He worked with many musicians from several cultures.
Cal Tjader was a beautiful musician concerned above all with attractive melodies and deep rhythms. He's often dismissed out of hand by many jazz fans, a shame since if they would just put their prejudices aside, they would find that he meant every note he played, no less so than Milt Jackson or Bobby Hutcherson. This album documents a 1969 live performance where Tjader and his band are in perfect synergy with all in attendance. Indeed, the audience occasionally breaks into spontaneous applause in mid-song just because the musicians are in such a sweet groove.

Cal Tjader - undoubtedly the most famous non-Latino leader of Latin jazz bands. In 1951 Guaraldi became a founding member of the Cal Tjader Trio and recorded several great albums with him. He also composed a modern classic in 'A Charlie Brown Christmas'. He was popular in the jazz world and recorded with Stan Getz and Ben Webster. Gerry Mulligan recorded his composition 'Rain, Rain, Go Away'. Some of Guaraldi's Peanuts compositions have been recorded by Dave Brubeck and Wynton Marsalis.
