Buffalo (The Phoenix Foundation album). Buffalo is the fourth full-length album by New Zealand band, The Phoenix Foundation. It was released in New Zealand in April 2010, and internationally in January 2011. The band's previous album, Happy Ending, had been well received in New Zealand and had stirred some interest overseas

The Phoenix Foundation is an indie rock band formed in Wellington, New Zealand. The band was founded by Conrad Wedde, Samuel Flynn Scott, and Luke Buda in 1994 while students at Wellington High School. In 2001, the band expanded their lineup, and were joined by Tim Hansen (bass), Richie Singleton (drums) and Will Ricketts (percussion). The band took their name from a fictional organization on the popular television show MacGyver.

I'm on the sea floor, I am the mammal you adore I'm on the sea floor, closer to the planet's core I am the buffalo, through the ocean I do roam I am the buffalo, calling home, calling home. I'm on the sea floor I am the mammal you adore I'm on the seafloor, closer to the planet's core I am the buffalo, through the ocean I do roam.

On their 2007 third album Happy Ending, some of us felt the Wellington band had delivered their masterwork after a couple of highly promising predecessors in Pegasus and Horsepower. It was a great set of songs set against a scenic soundscape and as it swung through sardonic but exuberantly infectious tracks like Bright Grey and 40 Years it became something of an artpop wonderland and an enduring classic. They've already got their wrigglier ideas out of the way on the recent Merry Kriskmass EP. But though the way Buffalo sounds evokes the usual PF adjectives - "cinematic" always being a handy stand-by for the more ambitious stuff - too many of its 10 tracks leave little lasting impression.

Taking a route increasingly denied to British pop, these New Zealanders have been able to develop under the radar over a decade before delivering what feels like a major breakthrough. Buffalo - Very Good, Based on 7 Critics. Buffalo doesn't reinvent the wheel. It's an album of dreamy, psychedelic pop: Byrdsy harmonies, Fleet Foxes-type haziness and a hushed transcendence reminiscent of the Stone Roses' gentler moments.
