Machinations may only be Hark’s second album, but as frontman for stoner, hardcore sludge merchants Taint from the mid-90’s right up until the end of the 21st century’s inaugural decade, James ‘Jimbob’ Isaac has put many years of hard work and graft into his craft. Machinations is a refinement of the robust formula captured on debut album Crystalline; it cuts the flab, takes the best elements and crafts them into a warped, spiralling intoxicating 47 minutes. The approach to Hark’s songwriting is old school, with Isaac preferring the band to work out the intricacies in the same room, putting together the various twists, turns and changes of pace that make up the record as a unit.

Hark’s sophomore album is very much a continuation of their debut album. Clearly, they have identified their own turbulent sound and are using it to their full potential. The opener, ‘Fortune Favours the Insane’, wastes no time introducing the band’s belligerent charisma where James Jimbob Isaac rolls Hark over rocky byways reminiscent to Baroness. Nevertheless, a very organic quality embodies Machinations. This album was naturally crafted out in a rehearsal room, save for a few core riffs written on the road, where arguments and happy accidents may arise. This gives Machinations the raw and honest foundation that Hark work best on.
Born from the ashes of the UK's criminally underrated stoner metal outfit Taint, HARK are definitely a name worth knowing in the current metal landscape.
