History has proven that Willie Nelson will duet with pretty much anybody who comes along, and while this open-hearted open mind sometimes backfires, more often than not it results in some of his most sublime recordings. Two Men with the Blues, his album with jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis recorded over a two-night stand at Jazz at Lincoln Center on January 12 and 13, 2007, belongs in the latter category, standing as truly one of the most special records in either Nelson's or Marsalis' catalog

In early 2007 two of contemporary American music's greatest icons, jazz trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis and country music legend Willie Nelson, teamed up for a couple of unforgettable nights at New York's Lincoln Center. The souvenir from those evenings proves to be one of those rare recordings that leaves you simultaneously exhilarated at having eavesdropped on two magnificent musicians working in perfect harmony, and devastated at not having been there in person. Two Men With The Blues may well be one of the greatest live albums ever made.
History has proven that Willie Nelson will duet with pretty much anybody who comes along, and while this open-hearted open mind sometimes backfires, more often than not it results in some of his most sublime recordings.
Though jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and country music legend Willie Nelson seemed to come from different musical planets, there was more that united them than separated them.
Their album is called Two Men With the Blues, and it opens with a swinging version of "Bright Lights, Big City. While the concept of pairing a jazz standard-bearer like Wynton Marsalis with a Country legend like Willie Nelson seems strange, the result works because it is neither a Country record nor a jazz album. Instead, the two veteran musicians found common ground in their love of the blues. Two Men With The Blues is a live recording, taped during a two-night stand during last year's "Jazz at Lincoln Center" event in New York City.
What Willie Nelson and Wynton Marsalis have created is a compilation of jump-blues standards with arrangements that compliment both genres. While most of the album is careful not to take itself too seriously, there are a few tracks that seem to plod on for ages. The live set kicks off with the upbeat "Bright Lights, Big City," on which Marsalis' horn is crisp and full. Ain't Nobody's Business" and "Basin Street Blues" are arranged slower than better known versions but still fit the album's context.
