Joe Beck's electric guitar was only a tentative addition to the quintet, but its effect here, after more than three hours of straight acoustic jazz, is almost startling. Traditional jazz purists will of course hear this as the Beginning of the End. And doctrinaire Prog Rock fans may find themselves well out of their comfort zone, always a good place for any true Proghead to be.

Recorded at the Columbia Studio B, NYC, the 30th Street Studio, NYC, and the Columbia Studios LA between January 20, 1965 and June 21, 1968. On track 5-2 'I Have A Dream (Rehearsal Take)' either George Benson or Joe Beck is added on guitar. The "Second Quintet" - the Miles Davis Quintet of the mid-1960s - was one of the most innovative and influential groups in the history of the genre.
