The British version of the Stones' first album has a nearly identical cover to its American equivalent, issued six weeks later, but a slightly different song lineup.

The Stones' most downbeat, druggy album, with new guitarist Mick Taylor stretching into jazz and country. Key Track: "Brown Sugar" was the big hit, but "Sway" is one of the band's spookiest pro-evil anthems. Best Keith Moment: His guitar battle with Taylor throughout "Bitch. England's newest hitmakers expand musically, from acoustic tunes to the pure electric mania of "Route 6. Key Track: "The Singer Not the Song," an early taste of delicate balladry. Best Mick Moment: He snarls "Get Off of My Cloud" with total punk hostility.

The American version of the album, originally subtitled but later officially called England's Newest Hit Makers,is the band's debut American album and was released by London Records on 30 May 1964, a month and a half after the British version.

What's the point of listening to us doing ʽI'm A King Beeʼ when you can hear Slim Harpo doing it?", Jagger once famously remarked - long after The Rolling Stones had mastered the art of writing their own material, of course; had he humbly and honestly admitted this in April 1964, this could go a long way in ruining Andrew Oldham's. Too much silliness, some of it PC-motivated rather than substantial in any way, has been spread about the whiteboy soulless blues imitations of the British Invasion - well, sometimes there's a grain of truth to it, depending on the level of talent and technique of the artist in question (and, no doubt about it, there were plenty of second- and third-rate. imitators back in the day, just as there are in any time period), but in the case of The Rolling Stones, this is an utterly misguided position.

Aftermath was the first album of Jagger-Richards originals and the first album the Stones recorded as a coherent whole. It showcases the sauciest Mick, the broodiest Keith, the prettiest Brian, the funkiest Bill, and Charlie-now and forever, Charlie. It's blues-rock flower power, but all the flowers are painted black, with Brian's marimba and dulcimer adding color to these tough, lean, desperately lonely songs.
