Great series! But does anybody know the story ???? / I always thought VOL 1- VOL 6 were made in Australia and actually were not really official releases / At about the end of the millenium or early into the 2000s all volumes reappeared as repressings in lesser quality (lesser Sound quality, Cover Artwork and inside liner notes looked a little blurred and a cheaper, harder quality of paper was used for the Covers and VOL 7 and VOL 8 were added to the series. Does anybody have more info?

The first 6 were compiled by Bruce Milne in Australia. The last two by Tim Warren in Berlin.

The history of these albums is a little confusing (to say the least). I'm not sure I can clear it up - except to say that on the reverse of all the albums it says "Licensed from BFD Records, Buzzard, California CA 94002". This is a gag and a play on the BFD address for the original Pebbles albums which was Kookaburra Australia. Now - Kookaburra is not a town in Australia... and Buzzard isn't a town in California - they are both birds of course. So it's a joke. (CA 94002 is the code for the city of Belmont in California but I'm not sure what that's got to do with anything).I thought that Greg Shaw of Pebbles fame just used an Australian address to throw any legal hounds offa the scent. But maybe the original Mastercharge issue of Pebbles 1 DID come out in Australia. I'm actually not sure. ANYWAY - in my opinion these comps came from the US. The first volume was 1986 and the rest followed more or less year by year. They have been repressed like you say with inferior artwork. So - when the first pressings ran out someone saw an opportunity and bootlegged the bootlegs. I've seen other issues also called 'Songs The Cramps Taught Us' with varying artwork on both CD and LP. And don't forget the Righteous label cd comp as well - 'Bad Music for Bad People - Songs the Cramps Taught Us' which has a similar line-up of artsists. So - there's a lot of them about. They just must sell really well. As they should - as Lux and Ivy had exceptional taste and a lot of the songs on these albums are amongst the very best music ever made.
