Follow the Blind is the second full-length album from the German metal band Blind Guardian. It was released in 1989 and is more in the vein of speed metal, compared to the style that would later define the band's unique sound. According to guitarist Marcus Siepen, "When we were doing Follow the Blind we were listening to a lot of thrash metal bands like Testament or Forbidden, and that's why Follow the Blind was a bit heavier".

Follow the Blind Your journey, your last hope, it can begin These passing dreams Were real no fantasy There are more things than we know Come take my hand. I'm another Strange my feelings Where am I here For a short time I remember I had been here. I'm alone, follow me Calling you, follow me I'm alone, follow me Follow the Blind

Blind Guardian is a band that today is known for their grand, subtle, symphonically tinged compositions combined with speed and power metal riffs and quick solo flurries. But Blind Guardian weren't always this delicate. Back in the day, their music had a lot more rough edges to it. And the prime example of their furious speed metal days is an album called Follow The Blind, their sophomore release. And this disc begins like BG tend to. Following a short little ditty intro called Inquisition, the band roars into high gear with the furious Banish From Sanctuary.

'Follow the Blind', the follow-up to 1988's debut 'Battalions of Fear', more-or-less follows in the footprints left by its predecessor in being nothing more than a generic, run-of-the-mill late 80's power/speed metal album. While there are some very subtle orchestral elements dotted around here and there, a sign of where Blind Guardian would go with future releases, it's still a long way off from what would go on to become the bands defining sound. The songwriting never strays far from the speed metal clichés, and Hansi Kursch's vocals, normally a pleasure to listen to, have yet to reach their full maturity here. The true gem of this record is no doubt 'Banished from Sanctuary', a song which remains a staple of any live set to this day. Otherwise, most of the songs sound pretty similar and it's hard to really pick out any specific highlights. The production sounds exactly how you would expect it to, giving the music a raw, harshness that it needs, and a guest appearance from Kai Hansen (of Helloween/Gamma Ray fame), is a welcome addition, though only further distinguishes this album as nothing more than a standard power metal affair.Overall, it's not a terrible record, and I love Blind Guardian, it's just that this is a band still trying to find themselves. They'd certainly develop a sound to call their own over the next few albums, but otherwise, 'Follow the Blind' is one I'd recommend solely to the collectors.

Blind Guardian's Follow The Blind is one of the most underrated Blind Guardian album. I was deceived the first time I heard it. Nevertheless, when I put the ear a second time, I loved this album. In fact, this Blind Guardian release is the essence of sword and sorcery (Moorcock or Fritz Leiber). All the atmosphere is heavy, dark and doomed. Hansi Kürsch has one of his most guttural voice, whereas the Thomas Stauch's beat can't let the listener free. Marcus Siepen's rythms are truly skilled and repetitives (but it's not a bad point on this release). Added to the André Olbrich's well constructed solos, the Blind wake up, walk, and you must follow him if you don't want to be lost in twilight hall. Of course, there are speed tracks (it's a speed metal band !) like Banished From Sanctuary, Valhalla, or Don't Break The Circle. And these are fantastics, masterpiece of Speed Metal. But the other tracks and in particular Follow The Blind have a lower tempo, a damned tempo. But it reprepresents all the album's mind : Damnation. It's not a hazard if two songs are written on Elric, the Moorcock's character, Eternal Champion and eternal damned. And because we're not in Black Metal or Doom Metal, the listener would be surprised to listen so heavier compositions. So, this release must be listened a lot of time to be marked as well.
