11 is the third full-length album by The Smithereens, released on October 18, 1989 (see 1989 in music). It includes the Billboard Top 40 single "A Girl Like You". The album was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America in June 1990. The album title was inspired by the film Ocean's 11, "with a little push from Spinal Tap's famous line, "This one goes to 11", according to guitarist Jim Babjak.
Blow Up was released the same month as Nirvana’s Nevermind and soon radio would have a weakness for killer melodies laced with distorted guitars – you know, the kind of music the Smithereens had been making before this album. The ironic part of the story is that Nirvana, and specifically Kurt Cobain, were fans of the Smithereens. Enjoying the sound the band achieved on its early records, Nirvana even contacted former Smithereens producer Don Dixon about working on Nevermind (he turned down the trio)
