2006's Gang of Losers found Montreal-based indie rock darlings the Dears stripping back some of the orchestral flourishes that peppered their acclaimed 2004 release No Cities Left, a move that did little to reduce the band's penchant for effective drama. Four years later, founding members Murray Lightburn and Natalia Yanchak decided to go it alone on Missiles, their first for the Dangerbird label

Musically, the Dears stay on point on Missiles. They've long excelled at atmosphere, and the tag "cinematic" stuck early and has since become adjectival shorthand for the band's sound. It applies here as well, though the group's sense of cinema feels more refined on the whole on the new record. Gone are the days when the Dears would tarnish a perfectly good song with an overcooked outro (see "Never Destroy Us" off No Cities Left ) or indulge in multi-part epics seemingly for their own sakes. This newfound restraint sometimes works against the Dears, however. Missiles is a record largely without proper choruses, instead favoring songs that unfold gradually- a linear approach rather than a cyclical one. Yet with a running time of nearly an hour, this means several tracks that meander and a couple crescendos that feel undeserved.
There's a determination to slog through the usual, apocalyptic drama that dogs Dears records on Missiles – an album made as the band crumbled to just Lightburn and Natalia Yanchak – and transcend it somehow, whether through faith or familial devotion or pharmaceuticals or face-melting guitar solos. I'm sick of playing the blues and rebels taking over without a clue," sings Lightburn wearily on "Dream Jo. "They got dreams of taking someone else's dreams away, But we got dreams. The intrusion of a children's choir into the mix still doesn't give us a convincing happy ending to what might be the slowest and most sombre album in the band's catalogue. That doesn't preclude the odd rock moment like Patrick Krief's scorching guitar solo at the back end of "Lights Of. ) Yet the care taken to reward patient and faithful fans with another stellar Dears album is palpable.
