The Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54 was completed in the year 1845 and is the only piano concerto written by the German Romantic composer Robert Schumann. The work was premiered in Dresden on December 4, 1845. Schumann had earlier worked on several piano concerti: he began one in E-flat major in 1828, from 1829–31 he worked on one in F major, and in 1839, he wrote one movement of a concerto in D minor. None of these works were completed.

Robert Schumann Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in A minor, op. 54 (34 mi. Daniil Trifonov piano. The composer had originally conceived this movement as a fantasy for piano and orchestra, and – because no publisher was interested in this form – later expanded it to a three-movement concerto. The close relationship between soloist and orchestra was also unusual for the time. His performance of Prokofiev’s Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 3 with the London Symphony Orchestra and Valery Gergiev was one of the highlights of the BBC Proms in 2015. In the 2015/16 season, followed his first recital at Walt Disney Hall in Los Angeles, a four-concert residency at Wigmore Hall and his subscription concert debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra. He gave concerts in Shanghai with the New York Philharmonic, to whose board of directors he was elected in November 2015.

Performer: Alicia de Larrocha, Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos. Orchestra: London Philharmonic Orchestra. Conductor: Lawrence Foster. Composer: Maurice Ravel, Gabriel Fauré, César Franck. The all French program is capped by Cesar Franck's 'Variations Symphoniques For Piano & Orchestra', another work not frequently performed and while it has moments of fine lyrical beauty, they are interspersed with some prosaic writing. This is an unusual but fine CD and one that has been missing for too long a period of time. Grady Harp, August 06. Piano Concerto in a Minor, Op. Allegro vivace.
