The Passio secundum Joannem or St John Passion (German: Johannes-Passion), BWV 245, is a Passion or oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach, the older of the surviving Passions by Bach. It was written during Bach's first year as director of church music in Leipzig and was first performed on April 7, 1724, at Good Friday Vespers at the St. Nicholas Church. The Passion according to Saint Matthew BWV 244. By Joshua Rifkin (Early 1970’s). Every year on Good Friday, a Passion was performed in one of Leipzig's two principal churches, S. Thomas and St. Nicholas. When writing the St. John Passion, Bach evidently lacked an adequate literary collaborator and had to assemble his libretto himself, adapting most of the madrigalesque (. freely written) portions from Barthold Heinrich Brockes's Der für die sünde der Welt gemartete und sterbende Jesus (Jesus Martyred and Dying for the Sin of the World), a celebrated Passion poem set by.
In contrast to the St Matthew Passion with its 26 arias and ariosos, the St JohnPassion conspicuously plays down the contemplative verses and, as a result, the solo numbers are of secondary importance. The work contains no more than ten arias and ariosos, thus giving it a much stronger dramatic element. Don’t you think it is much bolder, more powerful and poetic than the one according to Matthew? To me the latter seems to have been written some five or six years earlier. I think it contains some shallow parts and is inordinately long.
Only St. John and St. Matthew survive, with a few parts remaining for St. Mark. He wrote the first version of the St. John Passion for the Good Friday service in 1724. It was long thought that he composed the St. Matthew Passion for the 1729 service, but modern scholars have made a strong case that he had already performed the piece two years before. The St. Matthew Passion was heard within a very lengthy Vespers service on Good Friday, the most solemn day in the Christian calendar.
