New Year's Concert 2017 - Vienna Philharmonic & Gustavo Dudamel. This 2017 New Year’s Concert double album is one of the most successful in the series. Appropriately so, since two big anniversaries are being celebrated here: the 175th of the Vienna Philharmonic and the 150th of the most famous of all Strauss pieces, The Blue Danube waltz, which is, as always, an encore here

The Vienna Philharmonic here is unmatched in tone, clarity and balance. Kleiber gets so much drive and forward momentum out of the first movement. I have heard other recordings match his mvmt 1 in melodic beauty, but none other that also provide the sense of anger and power. All the best qualities of Brahms and Kleiber reach an almost sacred synergy in this recording. Kleiber knew that this synergy would occur. Drama, intensity, and energy are present in large doses but so are sweeping tenderness, unfolding complex harmonization, and sublime beauty. The word "riveting" aptly describes Kleiber's Brahms 4. So does precision, keen awareness of orchestral balance and texture, perfect pacing, and attention to lyricism. Instrumental sonorities are vivid. 11 people found this helpful.
The story of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra can be traced back to 1842, when Otto Nicolai conducted a "grand concert" with "all the members of the Orchestra of the Imperial and Royal Court Opera Theatre". This event is generally regarded as marking the birth of the orchestra. Ever since it was founded, the orchestra has been run by a democratically elected committee and is artistically, organisationally and financially independent. The New Year's Concert was first broadcast live on television in 1959. The Vienna Philharmonic regards this now traditional event as a way of wishing the world a Happy New Year through the medium of music in a spirit of hope, friendship and peace.
