As epitomised by a title track referencing his haemorrhoids, the former Czars frontman has lost none of his candor or humor on this third solo album. His melodic skill remains intact too and, after the electro-pop of 2013’s Pale Green Ghosts, Grant investigates robotic funk ( Snug Slacks ), taut techno ( Disappointing ) and sumptuous FM rock ( Down Here ) while skewering ex-lovers and contemplating personal crises. Even on his most upbeat record yet, it’s an ability to amuse, shock and discomfit–sometimes in just one verse–that makes Grant such a compelling songwriter
The album is also full of Grant’s deeply personal narrative and dark humour: grey tickles is a literal translation of the Icelandic for midlife crisis; black pressure translates the Turkish for nightmare. Inspired by a love affair with his adopted home, Iceland, and its native tongue, in which he speaks on much of the album, the singer has found a retreat in the country’s otherworldly landscape. I was in fight-or-flight response my whole life, with adrenaline fatigue, PTSD – there was no safety ever, he says.
Grey Tickles, Black Pressure captures everything great about Grant's past and bundles it into his most riveting album ye. .
Now comes Grant’s third album, the invitingly titled Grey Tickles, Black Pressure, a veritable tour-de-force that further refines and entwines his two principal strands of musical DNA, the sumptuous tempered ballad and the taut, fizzing electronic pop song. There are newer musical accomplishments across its panoply of towering sound, like the title track’s new steely demeanour, while the ominous drama of Black Blizzard echoes both John Carpenter and Bernard ‘Black Devil Disco Club’ Fevre’s beautiful and icy synthscapes. John has released a NSFW (or at least not for the squeamish!) album trailer featuring the title track which can be viewed belo. ubmitted By jimmy.
Grey Tickles, Black Pressure. A masterfully sincere yet acerbic balladeer stretches himself a little thin on an otherwise strong album. John Grant isn’t like that. Still relatively unknown in America, but justly lauded overseas, he’s the gay Harry Nilsson of today - a disarmingly downhearted guy who excels at every element of singer-songwriter craft
The album’s title signals that the sweetness of Queen Of Denmark is history; ‘Grey Tickles’ derives from the Icelandic phrase for mid-life crisis, while ‘Black Pressure’ comes from Turkish for nightmare. Many noted Grant’s fascinating character assassination of former lover TC in 2013’s Pale Green Ghosts. His grief still hasn’t transcended the anger phase; most notably, You & Him is a luscious squelchy synth collage, over which Grant delineates his subject’s self-regard, until the anthemic powerpop chorus: You and Hitler ought to get together, you ought to learn to knit and wear matching.
