Bowel dilatation is only visible when the bowel contains gas. The amount of gas within a loop of bowel may significantly underestimate its caliber. CT. Bowel dilatation is much more clearly demonstrated on CT. The degree of dilatation can be assessed independent of whether the bowel is filled with fluid or gas. In addition, the bowel wall and other structures can be interrogated. Bowel dilatation can be seen on ultrasound, but this is usually dependent on the bowel being fluid-filled and there being no gas-filled bowel anteriorly. MRI. Bowel caliber can be assessed on MRI.

Gastric dilatation volvulus (GDV), also known as gastric dilation, twisted stomach, or gastric torsion, is a medical condition that affects dogs in which the stomach becomes overstretched and rotated by excessive gas content. The word bloat is often used as a general term to mean gas distension without stomach torsion (a normal change after eating), or to refer to GDV.

Post-stenotic aortic dilatation. Authors: Emma Wilton University of London United Kingdom. Aortic stenosis is the most common valvular heart disease affecting up to 4% of the elderly population. It can be associated with dilatation of the ascending aorta and subsequent dissection. Post-stenotic dilatation is seen in patients with AS and/or aortic regurgitation, patients with a haemodynamically normal bicuspid aortic valve and following aortic valve replacement. Controversy exists as to whether to replace the aortic root and ascending aorta at the time of aortic valve replacement, an operation that potentially carries a higher morbidity and mortality
