Foreign Legion formed in 1984 from the ashes of a band called Society, later Dead On Arrival. Dead on Arrival had one song on 1984's Bullsheep Detector album. Following the name change to Foreign Legion (due partly to people shortening it to DOA, which could cause confusion with the Canadian band of that name) and a number of. line-up changes (drummers in particular) the band released their first EP in 1986, on their own Rent a Racket label with the line-up of . on vocals, Lyn Murphy on guitar, Helen James on bass and Paul (Marshon) Marsh on drums. drummer from 1980s Cwmbran punk band Impact (who also featured on the 1984 Bullsheep Detector album) Glyn (Sid Lovely) Bendon, together with Simon Bendon on guitar and Canis Humanus on bass.

The Foreign legion only recruits applicants actually reporting at an information desk (PILE) or at a preselection center (CP) located in Metropolitan France. Accommodation and food are free during the whole selection process. The Foreign legion does not facilitate any administrative steps.

Foreign Legion is the third studio album by Murfreesboro, TN band Fluid Ounces. The album marked a turning point for Fluid Ounces. The band had separated from Spongebath Records, and both founding members Brian Rogers and Ben Morton had left in 1999 to pursue other interests. The album was in fact named in honor of Morton, who at the time was considering joining the elite French Foreign Legion
