Album · 1962 · 6 Songs. The album’s highlight, of course, is a powerful version of Billy Strayhorn’s Lush Life. Hartman and Coltrane make the most of one of the 20th Century’s finest songs, shading it with musical and emotional colours that few artists even imagine. It hardly ends there, with the pair making thoughtful visits with They Say It’s Wonderful and My One and Only Love. More intimate than Sinatra’s orchestrated gems, the Coltrane and Hartman release hits a similar peak of style and expression. John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman Johnny Hartman.

John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman is a 1963 studio album featuring John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman. It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2013. Although it is often reported that Coltrane and Hartman had known each other since their days playing with Dizzy Gillespie's band in the late 1940s, the truth is that their time in the band never overlapped.

All the great songs and lyrics from the "Collection: 1947-1972" album ont he Web's largest and most authoritative lyrics resource. John Maurice Hartman (July 3, 1923 – September 15, 1983) was an American baritone jazz singer who specialized in ballads and earned critical acclaim, though he was never widely known. He recorded a well-known collaboration with the saxophonist John Coltrane in 1963 called John Coltrane and Johnny . ore . Year: 1998.

Late Night Romantic Evening. Accompanied by a subtle orchestra arranged by Rudy Traylor (the personnel is unknown), Hartman is in such fine form that it seems sad that this obscure effort was his only studio date of the 1957-62 period

The material is well-chosen, including definitive readings of "My One and Only Love" and "Lush Life. McCoy Tyner fills out the chords, augmenting the harmonies and keeping the tone of these ballads respectful but not overly sentimental. All the players get to the deep structure of the songs and are not afraid to play in the most essential and elegant manner. This is beautiful jazz. But for one afternoon they fused together a beautiful artistic creation. Some have lamented the brevity of the album but I choose to celebrate the fact that during the thirty-two minutes it takes to hear these six tracks, any desparate, clinging hope for romance is possible, and with any luck at all, I will owe Johnny a royalty.
