In 2006 Pedro the Lion was dissolved as Bazan went solo; Bazan reformed the band and resumed performing under the Pedro the Lion moniker in late 2017. Releasing five full-length albums and five EPs over 11 years, the band is known for its first person narrative lyrics with political and religious themes. EPs. Compilations. Control also saw Casey Foubert of Seattle-based Seldom join Pedro the Lion to play bass on the album. Additionally, he co-wrote "Penetration" and "Second Best", the third and eighth tracks, respectively, on the album, which was released in 2002.

The same year, The David Bazan Band did a tour dedicated specifically to playing the album "Control" that Bazan had recorded with Pedro the Lion in 2002. In July 2014 Bazan announced that he would be releasing new material. This project would be called "Bazan Monthly". The Poison Makes, split single b/w Walk Slow by Casey Foubert (January 2003, Bedside Recordings). Away in a Manger (October 25, 2006, Suicide Squeeze). Jingle Bells (November 4, 2008, Suicide Squeeze).

This time, Casey Foubert helps round out Bazan’s guitar and drums with sympathetic bass and keyboard work, creating a sonic atmosphere that veers from the brooding to the astringent (sometimes in the same track). As on previous albums, it’s the lyrics that give Pedro the Lion its deepest bite. Romantic betrayal is a recurring theme, whether depicted in the nervous forebodings of Options, the lethal jealously of Rehearsal, or the sordid infidelity of Second Best.

A long while ago, the band recorded this very first Almost Live session before we had even created our 7" series. The session was originally recorded with the intention for WHY? to release a full album called "Almost Live from Joyful Noise" (as the final part to the band's "Almost Live" album series). While we are still waiting for the full album to materialize, we decided it would be a good idea to include one track for the 7" series
