The Sisters of Mercy are an English rock band, formed in 1980 in Leeds. After achieving early underground fame there, the band had their commercial breakthrough in the mid-1980s and sustained it until the early 1990s, when they stopped releasing new recorded output in protest against their record company WEA. Currently, the band are a touring outfit only. The group has released three original studio albums, the last of which was released in 1990.

Sisters Of Mercy singer Andrew Eldritch on Swedish pop, dodgy Japanese movies and cricket on the radio. Born Andrew William Harvey Taylor in the small town of Ely in Cambridgeshire on May 15, 1959, Eldritch formed The Sisters Of Mercy in Leeds in 1980 and has remained the group’s sole constant and figurehead ever since. With the albums First And Last And Always (1985) and Floodland (1987), the Sisters became known as the definitive goth rock band – a term that Eldritch loathes. But in the early 90s, when he believed that his singular artistic vision was being compromised, Eldritch declared that The Sisters Of Mercy were on strike against their record company. And with the maverick sensibility.

A new Sisters of Mercy album is the holy grail of goth music. At first his reticence allegedly had to with a dispute involving EastWest Records, but in interviews over the last decade he’s made it clear that he just doesn’t see the reason in making another album from a commercial standpoint. Eldritch seemed to indicate in his interview that the election of Trump would spark an inability to keep silent. Though I’ve seen some great music come out of the world since 2016, the hoped-for new revolution of counter-art has not exactly birthed a mainstream movement. I don’t expect a man approaching 60 to lead that movement either.
