Francesca da Rimini tells the story of Paolo and Francesca, condemned to damnation for a kiss. Shakespeare also found a home on Tchaikovsky’s proverbial bedside table. Many composers have found inspiration in the Bard’s famous ‘star-cross’d’ lovers. Tchaikovsky counted his contribution to this genre, the Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture, among his very best works. The Sussex-born conductor, Anthony Collins, left a treasured legacy for Decca, including the symphonies and selected tone poems by Sibelius. Orchestra: London Philharmonic Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra. Conductor: Leopold Stokowski. Composer: Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Given that Stokowski has a natural affinity for Tchaikovsky (granted in heavily reorchestrated performances) one would think his Capricio Italien would be great, but it's just a standard run through. Nothing to get excited about. The Eugene Onegin excerpts is outstanding.

The Capriccio Italien, Op. 45, is a fantasy for orchestra composed between January and May 1880 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. A typical performance of the piece lasts about 15 minutes. The Capriccio was inspired by a trip Tchaikovsky took to Rome with his brother Modest as respite from the composer's disastrous marriage with Antonina Miliukova. It was in Rome, however, that the observant Tchaikovsky called Raphael a "Mozart of painting.
