Graceland is Paul Simon’s seventh solo studio album and won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1987. Coming off the commercial disappointment of Hearts and Bones and the end of his marriage to actress Carrie Fisher, Simon became fascinated with the Afrikaans music of South Africa. Despite the cultural embargo placed on the nation at the time due to the apartheid, Simon recorded the album with several South African musicians, and toured with them in support of the album
With Graceland, Paul Simon hit on the idea of combining his always perceptive songwriting with the little-heard mbaqanga music of South Africa, creating a fascinating hybrid that re-enchanted his old audience and earned him a new one. It is true that the South African angle (including its controversial aspect during the apartheid days) was a powerful marketing tool and that the catchy music succeeded in presenting listeners with that magical combination: something they'd never heard before that nevertheless sounded familiar.
Paul Simon started calling his song "Graceland" after he came up with the track, which reminded him of the Sun Records sound where Elvis recorded. He traveled to South Africa in February 1985 and recorded with a variety of local musicians. One of these sessions was with an accordion player named Forere Motloheloa, who played on the song "The Boy in the Bubble. It is an album focusing mostly on African music, but it also explores other forms of non-mainstream music, like Zydeco.
