Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda (SV 153) is an operatic scena for three voices by Claudio Monteverdi, although many dispute how the piece should be classified. The piece has a libretto drawn from Torquato Tasso's La Gerusalemme Liberata ("Jerusalem Delivered", Canto XII, 52–62, 64–68), a Romance set against the backdrop of the First Crusade, when Godfrey of Bouillon conquered Jerusalem.

The Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, composed for the most prominent of Monteverdi's Venitian partons, the senator, Girolamo Mocenigo, was performed for the first time at the Mocenigo Palace near St Mark's Square, during the Carnival of 1624. Based on a passage from Torquato Tasso's Gerusalemme liberata, it is a crucial work in Monteverdi's output, partly because it is virtually the only clue we have of his approach to music for dramatic performance between the two Mantuan operas and the two late Venetian ones. The two ‘works with acting’ by Claudio Monteverdi on this CD are two treatments of the same theme: Death. In ‘Il ballo delle ingrate’, the cause of death is refusal of sexual intercourse: ‘Who is Love’s enemy and arms her heart in the flower of youth with cruel affections, will suffer burning and torment’. As Paolo Fabbri notes in his excellent introduction, it ‘is a piece of propaganda in favour of erotic love’.

Claudio Monteverdi was born in Cremona in 1567, the son of an apothecary and physician who had come to occupy a leading position in his profession in the city. Monteverdi was probably trained as a chorister at the cathedral and was certainly a pupil of the distinguished maestro di cappella Marcantonio Ingegneri, a composer of international reputation. It was in Venice in 1637 that the first public opera-house was opened and Monteverdi was able again to contribute to this repertoire. In 1640 his Arianna was revived at the Teatro San Moise, now converted from theatre to opera-house, and in the same year a new opera Il ritorno di Ulisse in patria (The Home-Coming of Ulysses) at the Teatro San Cassiano.
