Midfield General, real name Damian Harris, is the original founder of the Skint Records label, which became the forerunner of the big success of Norman Cook's Fatboy Slim. Midfield General is the recording alias of Skint label boss Damian Harris. A prime architect of the sound of big beat, Harris grew up listening first to punk rock, then hip-hop, and finally acid house.

Damian Harris, also known by his stage name Midfield General, is the original founder of the Skint Records label. Midfield General - Generalisation.

Yet under his nom de plume of Midfield General, Skint label owner and musician Damian Harris takes the "who gives a toss" approach to create a moody, antsy collection of breaks, beats, and a steadfast refusal to die. Luckily, music loves an iconoclast. One of the first warning signs of a quality comeback in the world of big beat was most assuredly Harris' own On the Floor at the Boutique, Vol. 3 mix album because much like that mix, Generalisation retains the unpretentious breakbeats and infectious eclecticism that made big beat such a good idea in the first place

A pretty good CD when you compare it to the release from big beat competitors such as Fat Boy Slim and the Chemical Brothers. I guess the Midfield General's profile is not as big but it allows him to release whatever the fuck he feels like. I 1st got interested in MFG from his Big Beat Boutique release which contains some very funky track choices. The 2nd track on Generalisation, Devil In Sports Casual is a big beat masterpiece complete with police sirens and a mad sample about "you make the music go back and you hear Satan speaking". But the best track for me is track 7 - Midfielding. This has a really stupid but interesting story about native British marsupials travelling to Africa to "kick some butt". I was inspired to search the internet to find the lyrics, but I couldn't find them. I believe that they deserve to be out there for everyone to have a laugh. So I'm gonna waste half an hour transcribing them! Even the Guardian newspaper has made comment about this track being a killer.
