NoGeo (9xFile, FLAC, Album). Ghostly International. NoGeo (LP, Album, Ltd, Cre).
Logan Takahashi - NoGeo Logan Takahashi is best known as half of the production duo Teengirl Fantasy. Dating back to 2009, their music, overloaded and wonderfully clunky, seemed inspired by the early internet. The title NoGeo is an inversion of Neo Geo, a video game system from the early '90s and a music genre ushered in by Ryuichi Sakamoto through his album of the same name. Takahashi says he also drew from the "early '00s Brooklyn tabletop electronics scene. Overall, he wants the album to reflect his concept of technology as organic extensions of society and the planet, reflected in the selection of sounds. In NoGeo's best songs, Takahashi extracts a danceable palette from banal drones.
There is nothing particularly new or unique in Logan Takahashi's debut album. However, his influences are so diligently studied and so well assimilated, that everything in NoGeo sounds natural and fluid. Anyone familiar with the Raster-Noton catalog, -most notably Kangding Ray and Frank Bretschneider-, Mark Fell's work, or modern experimental techno in general, will have an idea about what to find in here. If the styles and sounds in here are not original, in return NoGeo is intelligent and polished, paying homage to its influences and skillfully condensing them in 40 minutes: Takahashi's owns this sound, and proudly and rightfully presents the result to the listener. For its short running-time, there is plenty to chew and digest, but this never feels like a task. A fine album to be played in private parties.
Album · 2016 · 9 Songs. NoGeo Logan Takahashi. Listen on Apple Music. Intricate but inviting, this shimmering debut is a mosaic of vintage techno textures.
Logan Takahashi returns to Ghostly with Crema, an eight-track journey traversing dub-techno, earthly electronics, and meticulously crafted melodies. Crema wriggles, bounces, and stretches its way through the senses. The EP’s tactile exploration of rhythm and timbre is testament to Takahashi’s instinctual approach. Crema follows Takahashi’s debut solo album, 2016’s NoGeo, and was largely composed on hardware for live sets over the past two years. As such, it is both a portrait of the live moment, and a snapshot of the artist in motion
Logan Takahashi caps off a dynamic year that saw the producer and one-half of Teengirl Fantasy release his debut solo album, NoGeo. An album set to its own unique pace, NoGeo was an opportunity for Takahashi to bring listeners into a world he built from the ground up. For NoGeo Remixes, Takahashi provides a wide canvas for Sporting Life and Kaazi to reinterpret two of the album’s tracks.
