On 2005's HEAT, French one-man band Colder (AKA Marc Nguyen Tan) follows up his acclaimed debut with another strong set of electronic post-punk tunes. The atmosphere stays closer to Colder's moniker rather than the album's somewhat deceptive title, with Tan's detached vocals skimming over the songs' icy surfaces.
Marc Nguyen Tan (born 1974), known professionally as Colder, is a French dance musician and graphic designer who is also a DJ and remixer who remains actively involved in dance music and other projects. Colder's sound is rooted in the post-punk and post-disco of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Colder is also influenced by dub and krautrock.
Since its appearance in 2003 Colder's dour rhythmic music has been heard in some appropriate places. Release Date: Oct 25, 2005 Record label: Output Genre(s): Electronic. 80 Music Critic Score How the Music Critic Score works. Heat - Very Good, Based on 1 Critics.
In retrospect Colder's debut album 'Again' was overhyped to death a few years back, meaning strong material from that record (see 'Crazy In Love') get unjustly overlooked whilst other electro acts (we're too polite to say) garner an unreasonable amount of accolades.
There's no seismic shift in mood on Parisian Marc Nguyen Tan's second album, though it does have its more emotive, even upbeat moments and it never becomes quite as tortured as Joy Division, one of his primary influences. Before Colder, Tan worked as a graphic designer counting Commes des Garcons among his clients. Just as the boss from a top flight fashion house often opts for simple black attire over ostentation so Tan's music is unfussy and spartan - his deadpan vocal is delivered over drum machines, floating synth lines and pulsing bass.
