The group was originally formed by French producers Jacques Morali, Henri Belolo and lead singer Victor Willis following the release of the debut album Village People, which targeted disco's gay audience. The group's name refers to New York City's Greenwich Village, at the time known for its large gay population.

Cruisin' (Village People album). Cruisin' is the third studio album by the American disco group Village People, released on September 25, 1978. Its name carries a double meaning: it may mean just driving around or gay cruising. This became obvious even for straight audiences in 1980, when William Friedkin's movie Cruising was released. Features the hits "Hot Cop" and ".
In spite of looking like village idiots, the Village People surprised everybody with this popular four-song album. Phil Hurtt, a good friend of Thom Bell and the writer of "I'll Be Around," arranged and co-authored three songs. Produced by Henri Belolo and Jacques Morali (Ritchie Family) Village People exploits and promotes gay liberation, in a little over 20 minutes of music. The vocals slap you in the face, the beats nonstop, but it's hard to fully enjoy because visions of clowns dressed in every Halloween costume imaginable keep dancing in your head
Village People was the creation of Jacques Morali, a French composer. He had written a few dance tunes when he was given a demo tape recorded by singer/actor Victor Willis. Morali approached Willis and told him, "I had a dream that you sang lead on my album and it went very, very big" The album was a success, and demand for live appearances soon followed. Its title is a double entrendre: it may mean just driving around or gay cruising.
