Sibelius: The Complete Symphonies, tone poems. First, this recording was made with Vienna Philharmonic during the successful time Metha had with this stunning orchestra in the early seventies. A few years later (1975), he made his famous recording of Mahler's second symphony with the same orchestra (the present recording can be also found in a Decca twofer with the Mahler symphony). Second, Metha's recording is a classic, which provides us with a sense of discovery. The players here are members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, again under Zubin Mehta, who make as convincing a case for the work as is possible.
The Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47, was written by Jean Sibelius in 1904, revised in 1905. It is his only concerto. It is symphonic in scope, with the solo violin and all sections of the orchestra being equal voices. An extended cadenza for the soloist takes on the role of the development section in the first movement. Sibelius originally dedicated the concerto to the noted violinist Willy Burmester, who promised to play the concerto in Berlin
Sibelius: Symphony No. 5 in E flat major, Op. 82. 29:20. BBC Symphony Orchestra. I. Tempo molto moderato - Allegro moderato. In this regard, his performances of the music of Jean Sibelius were always exceptionally well received, and we are very pleased to present this new transfer of several of his most memorable Sibelius recordings from the 1950s with the BBC Symphony Orchestra of which he was chief conductor for many years.
