With Bach's St. Matthew Passion, Rene Jacobs has returned to his element. Recall his brilliant early recording of Bach's Christmas Oratorio for Harmonia Mundi, secular cantatas, and motets. This recording is interpreted in the same vein: solemn but forward-thrusting, reflective but dramatic. Bach's St. Matthew Passion, after all, is a monumental work requiring two choirs and two orchestras. Essentially, the Passion belongs to the "dialogue cantata" tradition (think about the dialogue aria in "Wachet auf," BWV140), where a central feature is two soloists & to one another. Bach augmented the idea for Leipzig's Good Friday services by having two choirs in dialogue with one another. Of course, this presents difficulties.
Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach: St. Matthew Passion, BWV 244. Gardiner, English Baroque Soloists, Monteverdi Choir. Matthew once again: Gardiner had his English Baroque Soloists and the famous Monteverdi Choir learn the colossal work by heart. Is it possible to hear that the musicians and singers aren't looking at their sheet music on a recording? And how does this live recording compare to the epochal studio production from 1989? There's plenty to discuss here!
